Merzouga Desert Excursion: Complete Guide

Why Choose Merzouga?

Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, Morocco's largest sand dune complex. These majestic dunes, which can reach 150 meters in height, offer a breathtaking desert landscape. Unlike other Moroccan desert regions, Merzouga provides an authentic experience with its orange fine sand dunes, hidden oases and preserved nomadic culture. It's the flagship excursion for any visitor to Marrakech seeking adventure.

The Itinerary from Marrakech

The classic Merzouga excursion takes 2 or 3 days. On the first day, you leave Marrakech early morning to cross the Tichka Pass (2260m), a UNESCO World Heritage site for its spectacular panoramas. You then pass through the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a famous movie set used for Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After lunch in Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Africa", the road continues through the Dades Valley with its impressive rock formations.

Night in the Desert

Arrival at the desert's edge is in late afternoon. You then mount dromedaries for an approximately one-hour ride through the golden dunes, guided by Berber nomads. The sunset over the dunes is a magical moment you'll never forget. The Berber camp welcomes you with traditional mint tea. Dinner under the stars, accompanied by music and Berber songs around a campfire, is a unique experience. The tents are comfortable with real beds and warm blankets.

Desert Activities

Beyond the camel ride, many activities are available. Sandboarding lets you slide down dunes like snow. Quad or 4x4 rides offer thrills. The sunrise from atop a dune is an extraordinary natural spectacle. For culture enthusiasts, visiting a nomadic village reveals the desert people's way of life. The starry nights of the Sahara, far from any light pollution, reveal an unforgettable celestial vault.

Practical Tips

The best time to visit Merzouga is from October to April, when temperatures are pleasant. In summer, heat can exceed 45°C. Pack warm clothes for desert nights, as temperatures can drop considerably. A scarf or cheche is essential for sand protection. Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses and a camera with plenty of battery.
